ESO Represents West Asia’s NGOs in Bali February 2010

The Environment Society of Oman (ESO) was nominated by West Asia’s Environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to represent them at the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) 11th Special session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum” currently held in Bali, Indonesia.

UNEP’ s Regional Office for West Asia held a meeting in Amman- Jordan in December last year where major regional NGOs got together to discuss several environmental issues and elect representatives from the region to attend the high-level meetings in Bali. In November 2008, UNEP held the regional environmental NGO’s meeting in Muscat, Oman in collaboration with the ESO as the local partner.

ESO’s Vice-President, Dr. Mehdi Jaaffar, represented ESO at the meeting in Amman and was elected by his colleagues to be their spokesperson in Bali. As agreed at the meeting in Amman, Dr. Mehdi would be raising the following issues in Bali:

-          The importance of pursuing a green economy, focusing on green buildings, green practices and investments in renewable energies.

-          The need to stop and reverse the degradation of natural habitats and the need for consolidated global measures to ensure sustainability.

-          The management of hazardous harmful chemical substance under Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions.

The Governing Council was established by UNEP to promote international environmental cooperation and provide policy guidance for the coordination of environmental programs with the United Nations system. Events such as the one currently held in Bali strengthen international collaboration to achieve environmental protection.

ESO is proud to represent West Asia’s NGOs to these important meetings. This reflects the significant role that ESO will be playing at the local, regional and international levels. ESO values the confidence entrusted in its capabilities and will strive to maintain this trust.
